Recently I began taking Juice Plus+. Even more recently, I began selling it. Why? Because it is something I SO STRONGLY believe in. After such a short time, it has already begun to change my life. One of the things it has done is make me aware of the importance of fruits and veggies in our diets.
Did you know that it is now recommended that an adult consume 7-13 servings of fruits and veggies each day?! I don’t know about you, but until a couple months ago, that is more than I could have ever imagined eating in one day. The USDA now recommends that we make half our plate fruits and veggies at every meal. Even at that, we would fall short of the suggested 7-13 servings. We CANNOT eat too many fruits and veggies.
Why are they so important? Here is the scoop in a nutshell:
Fruits and vegetables promote healthy cells, which are our body’s defense against oxidative stress. They are packed full of nutrients that are absolutely essential to our health and to quality of life. Not only are fruits and veggies essential to our ability to feel our best, but they have seriously HUGE benefits. They help fight heart disease, certain types of cancer, high blood pressure, and type II diabetes (which used to be called “adult onset diabetes” until children began getting diagnosed with it. If that is not a strong case for more fruits and veggies in our diets EVERY DAY, then I don’t know what is).
Fruits and veggies are able to fight against chronic illness, stroke, and even slow the effects of aging because they are loaded with antioxidants. Antioxidants are God’s way of fighting off potentially harmful molecules in our bodies called free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that essentially feed off of otherwise healthy molecules in order to survive. Every day tens of thousands of free radicals are generated within the body, causing cell damage that can lead to chronic and degenerative diseases if left unchecked. Without having the antioxidants from fruits and veggies to fight these free radicals, they are left to potentially cause stroke, heart attack, arthritis, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s disease. Free radicals can also cause cancer, and while eating fruits and vegetables cannot prevent cancer, it can give your body a fighting chance against it, because antioxidants can neutralize cancer cells before they have time to form a mass.
Fruits and veggies also help slow the aging process! YEP!!! The antioxidants found in fruits and veggies slow the loss of muscle elasticity (which is the cause of wrinkles), makes us less susceptible to illness, and put the breaks on memory failure.
A few things to keep in mind when selecting your produce:
The produce available in most stores no longer contains the level of nutrients that it did 100 years ago. Because of pesticides and the diminished mineral levels in soils used today, eating non-organic, and even organic produce, will not provide you with the antioxidants (or vitamins and minerals) that your body needs.
It is best to choose fresh, frozen, dry, or canned fruits and veggies. The more heat that is added to the fruits and veggies, the more that the enzymes are damaged. That is why fresh and raw is always best!!!
Toss the microwave. It zaps the enzymes that the body needs, and diminishes SO MUCH of the natural goodness that is packed into fruits and veggies. If you microwave your fruits and veggies often, you are missing out on so many of the benefits that fresh fruits and veggies provide.
Variety is key:
It is best to pick a VERY WIDE variety of fruits and veggies…. eat fruits and veggies that are every color of the rainbow, and eat them often. Juicing is a good way to do this, as it allows you to cram lots of fruits and veggies into a glass, and then into your body. But Juicing is expensive, and it takes A LOT of time. I love when I am able to treat myself, but it does not happen regularly.
So… I have said it before and I will say it again. We now have a GREAT alternative to Juicing. Juice Plus+ truly is the next best thing to fruits and vegetables.
